Just found out you have depression?
So you got diagnosed with depression…
Sometimes finding out the answers to your questions are a relief, you finally know what’s been going on with you. You have validation for your feelings and your experiences, and you’re no longer stuck in the unknown.
But sometimes the answer is not what you want or expected to hear.
For some, being diagnosed with depression came with same force as the world caving down onto your shoulders. Depression is a heavy cross to bear. No one talks about having it because its a taboo conversation, its linked with suicide, and some people don’t even think it’s real. When I first got diagnosed, these thoughts ran through my mind like never ending high speed chase against me and my demons. I thought the diagnosis was telling me that I lost, but I was wrong.
Being diagnosed with depression is not bad. You haven’t lost anything, in fact, you have gained a new perspective. Like I said before, now you have answers to your questions. What you do with those answers is up to you, but I offer you my advice.
DON’T give up. You are your own worst enemy. You can either fight this, work with this, or let it win. You have to be strong forYOU.
DO be gentle with yourself and cut yourself some slack. You are doing the best you can. (As long as you are.)
DO get help, whether its seeing a therapist, or joining a support group, even calling ortexting a hotline. Validation, Support, and Understanding, are huge parts of coping and should NOT be neglected. Plus you may make some great friends in the process.
DON’T forget. You are not your depression. You have depression, but that does not define you.
For some the news of depression is unsettling, but we are here to remind you that you are not alone.
